Health Minister, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang is expected announce a subsidy
that will be provided by Government to assist maze meal and wheat flour millers
to comply with regulations for food fortification.
The announcement will be made in Pretoria this evening at a ceremony aimed
at reviewing the effects of the programme.
All millers are legally obliged to add six vitamins and two minerals to all
maze meal and wheat flour that is produced for consumption in the country. The
subsidy will assist particularly small millers to buy equipment that is
necessary for compliance.
In her address, Minister Tshabalala-Msimang is also expected to raise
concern about the negative effect of bread price fixing on the ability of the
Department of Health to reverse micro-nutrient deficiencies in the country.
