Nkoana-Mashabane, is to visit Anglo Platinum's Hostel de-densification project
in Union Section Mine at Swartklip

21 September 2007

The MEC for Local Government and Housing Maite Nkoana-Mashabane is to visit
Union Mine in Swartklip, outside Northam in the Thabazimbi Municipality, to
officially hand over the newly refurbished and renovated 'Single Accommodation
Village' to mine employees.

Anglo Platinum has revamped the formerly single sex hostels into single
accommodation facilities. The mine's hostel de-densification project is in line
with government's Community Residential Unit programme, which aims to
facilitate the provision of secure, stable tenure for low income earners.

The project costs the company R187 million and is part of the platinum
producer's transformation efforts as the newly refurbished villages are also
going to accommodate female mineworkers. Female mineworkers were previously
excluded from the mine villages.

NB: Presentation and a brief media tour

Members of the media are invited for a brief presentation about the Anglo
Platinum hostel de-densification project that was started in 2003. A tour of
the new village will be followed by lunch and refreshments. After the official
programme, the MEC and her delegation will have a brief interaction with the
media.
