The Department of Labour will today (Wednesday) commence with investigations
into the fatal accident in which three construction workers were killed at the
Volkswagen plant in Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape yesterday afternoon.
According to information received, the three employees of Construction
Company Grinaker died when components of a crane that they were dismantling
collapsed, resulting in them getting trapped in the debris.
Apart from requesting a swift and thorough report from the company on the
exact cause of the accident, the Labour Department has ordered an immediate
halt to all operations at the construction site until investigations have been
completed.
Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana has expressed condolences to the
families of the deceased workers.
