7 April 2006
Government is embarking on an Imbizo Focus Week from 6 to 13 April 2006. The
Premier, MECs, Ministers and Deputy Ministers will participate in the imbizo
programme in more than 15 events across the province in direct interaction with
the public.
Since the imbizo programme was initiated by government in 2001 the issues
encountered have often been around the same concerns such as lack of water,
housing, sanitation, electricity and roads. In 2005 our izimbizo listened
extensively to the people and our councillors and representatives of the
provincial government promised to look into some of the concerns raised. Thus
amongst some of the things we want to do this year is to report back on what
action was taken to address concerns that were highlighted in 2005 municipal
izimbizo programmes.
The Imbizo Focus Week will mark a period of intensified activity where all
spheres of government (national, provincial and local) interact with the people
across the province. The focus week will also serve as an opportunity for the
newly elected councils to engage with those they represent on how to speed up
local development through Integrated Development Plans (IDPs) and Local
Economic Development (LED) processes.
Izimbizo programme has been widely acknowledged as an effective forum for
enhancing dialogue and interaction between government and the people it serves.
They provide an opportunity for government to communicate its programme of
action and the progress being made. They promote participation by the public in
government programmes aimed at improving their lives.
