Discussion Document on Macro-social Trends in South Africa on Friday, 23 June
2006. Intellectuals, opinion makers and civil society representatives have been
invited to the launch, which will take the form of a panel discussion by
experts in the field with the aim of creating a nation wide dialogue on the
character of our society and what we want to become.

This discussion document by Policy Co-ordination and Advisory Services in
The Presidency presents areas critical for nation building and findings that
talk to societal values and practices. It identifies major trends that require
attention and national effort, not only of government but of all our society in
pursuit of an inclusive, caring and prosperous society.

Among other things the discussion document addresses issues of how the
material conditions impacting on the quality of life of South Africans have
changed since the advent of democracy; how South African society has changed
