Labour hosts briefing sessions on employer exemption regarding National Minimum Wage, 24 Apr

Curtain falls on Department of Labour NMW briefing sessions on employer exemption

The Department of Labour will tomorrow (April 24) host the ultimate briefing sessions aimed at employers and employer organisations in order to educate them on the National Minimum Wage (NMW) exemption process.

Tomorrow’s engagement is part of the national series of employers and employer organisations briefing sessions which kicked off in Gauteng on 19 March. The briefing session will be held at Ngwenya Hotel, corner Stilfontein & Ruth First roads in Stilfontein, Klerksdorp in the Northern West Province.

Similar workshops to engage with employers on NMW exemptions have been held in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, George, Durban,  Richards Bay, Lichtenburg, Springbok, Upington, East London, Port Elizabeth, Nelspruit, Piet Retief, Tzaneen, Polokwane, Bloemfontein, Bethlehem.

The employers and employer organisations briefing sessions follows on the heels of briefing sessions held for trade unions and shop stewards on the implementation of the national minimum wage and amendments to labour laws (Basic Conditions of Employment Act and Labour Relations Act). The 20 worker briefing sessions were held nationally from November 2017 until February 2018.

The National Minimum Wage Bill prescribes a national minimum wage of R20 per hour with the exception of sectors such as the farm/forestry, domestic and expanded public works programme workers, that have been given a transition period to currently pay R18, R15 and R11 per hour respectively.

Section 15 of the Bill makes provision for an employer or an employers’ organisation to apply for an exemption in the prescribed form and manner from paying the national minimum wage.

The briefing session start from 10:00am-13:00pm.
