Labour to hand over report on findings in investigation into death of
construction workers at Uitenhage Volkswagen plant

Car plant fatality probe, employers face prosecution

7 July 2006

The case of the fatal accident, which left three building construction
workers dead at the premises of Volkswagen plant in Uitenhage in May, could go
to court.

This follows a decision by the Department of Labour to refer to the public
prosecutor its findings into the accident.

The three Grinaker-LTA employees and their colleagues were working at a
construction site at the car manufacturer’s Eastern Cape premises on 30 May
when the accident occurred.

It is alleged that components of a crane that they were dismantling
collapsed resulting in them getting trapped in the debris.

The investigations in terms of section 31 of the Occupational Health and
Safety Act were launched immediately after the disaster.

The probe was finalised yesterday, 6 July, and the Department expects to
hand over the report of its findings, as well as recommendations for
prosecution against the employers, by no later than next Thursday, 13 July.
