Labour on elevator plunge of construction worker investigation

Worker plunges from 16th floor: DoL investigates

11 August 2006

The Department of Labour inspectors in Johannesburg have embarked on
full-scale investigations in a bid to uncover circumstances that led to the
16th floor elevator plunge of a construction worker.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the lift chain snapped when it was
apparently being fixed for safety purposes on Wednesday.

Inspectors insisted that the incident which resulted with the serious injury
of Oscar Mabori will be investigated in line with lift, escalator and passenger
conveyor regulations within the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of
1993.

Once investigations are completed the case will be handed over to the office
of the Public Prosecutor where a decision to prosecute or not will be made.

Mr Mabori was employed by Highpoint Elevators on a casual basis when he got
injured.
