Labour to check on Employment Equity violators, 7 – 11 Aug

Labour inspectors set to swoop on Employment Equity (EE)
violators

4 August 2006

The Department of Labour in the Free State will next week embark on a series
of aggressive workplace blitz inspections to check employers’ compliance with
Employment Equity (EE) laws.

The crackdown scheduled for between 7 and 11 August, will mainly target
designated employers with 50 or more workers as well as those with an annual
turnover of R2 million in the financial sector.

Focus will be particularly aimed at among others:

* determining whether employers have submitted EE reports of last year’s 1
October deadlines and if copies of those reports were available at the
workplace

* ensuring that employers have representative employment equity consultative
forums at their workplaces and if minutes are kept

* establishing stakeholders’ levels of awareness and understanding of EE
matters in the workplace

* monitoring general compliance of employers with the legislation, as well
as making use of the EEA checklist attached to the strategy.

The inspections precede next month’s beginning of the submission period of
the EE reports by the employers.
