The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) provincial government executive council today (16
May 2007) endorsed a child eye care programme to be implemented in all primary
schools in the province - the first such programme in the country.
The decision to endorse the programme was taken at the weekly executive
council meeting that was held today (16 May 2007) at the Umhlathuze
Municipality Civic Centre in Richards Bay.
The programme aims to immediately deliver eye care services to school
learners in need. It is also intended to strengthen and develop the capacity of
existing government structures to deliver on eye care services to primary
schools in the province.
KZN Education MEC Ina Cronje told the executive council that the programme
will be extended to hearing as well as this also impacted negatively on
performance at school.
The executive council also noted that national Health Minister Dr Manto
Tshabalala-Msimang had fully recovered and was back at work.
A delegation from the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) also briefed the
executive council on a variety of issues around service delivery in KZN.
KZN Premier Sibusiso Ndebele, together with members of his executive
council, will be at the Mahunu Sports Grounds in Empangeni tomorrow (17 May
2007 commencing at 10h00) as part of the Premier's Imbizo Programme intended to
strengthen municipal capacity. Media are invited to attend.
