KwaZulu-Natal Education on computer training for school staff

Computer Mice active in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) schools

16 October 2006

Several KwaZulu-Natal schools have been clicking their way into the 21st
century. The cause for this unusual computer mice activity is the fact that
teachers now know how to use them. Approximately 2 600 School Management Team
members at 1 320 schools had to become learners for three days after the
Department provided their schools with computers last year. This is in line
with KZN Education MEC Ina Cronje's view that she will not allow computers in
schools to become white elephants. "We cannot merely supply computers to
schools without providing the necessary training," she said.

The Basic Computer Literacy training for school management members is the
first in the Department's history and was offered at 53 sites from Tuesday, 15
August to Friday, 6 October 2006, throughout the province. The educators, who
completed the training in the use of Word Processing, Office XP Operating
system, Excel spread sheet and fault-reporting procedures, will receive
certificates.

A principal, who attended the training course at the Phoenix Teachers'
Centre, expressed his gratitude, "We really appreciate the training. It has
really empowered us. Some of us have never worked on computers before. We are
looking forward to some more training."
