The KwaZulu-Natal Cabinet met today, Wednesday, 14 November, and deliberated
on a number of issues including the mobilisation of the entire provincial
public service in preparations for the upcoming Federation International
Football Association (Fifa) Preliminary Draw in Durban next week.
The Cabinet, which met at its ordinary meeting in Pietermaritzburg, also
considered a new provincial 2010 logo. Premier Sibusiso Ndebele told the
Cabinet that the upcoming Fifa events were enormous and that public servants
needed to understand fully what was expected of them in ensuring a successful
hosting of both the Preliminary Draw and the actual 2010 Fifa World Cup.
"For an example, KwaZulu-Natal will be the only province in the country to
have the whole world, 204 countries descending on it at once on 25 November. We
have serious opponents to this and we want the public service and the media to
partner with us in this," Ndebele said.
The Cabinet also received a presentation on the country's global trade and
investment opportunities from Ambassadors Jerry Matjila and Johan Marx. The
Cabinet was told that country has taken a decision to position South Africa as
a trading nation and that KwaZulu-Natal had to play its role in areas such as
trade, investment, tourism and information technology (IT). The provincial
Trade and Investment Strategy had to be linked to the nation's industrial
policy. It was also stated in the presentation that the province should access
and utilise development funds from the European Union and other donor
agencies.
On the recent fire tragedy at Nkandla which left 12 elderly people dead, the
Cabinet was informed that a new structure would be constructed to house the
inmates as the present one has proven to be inhabitable.
The Cabinet was also informed about the African Diaspora conference
scheduled to take place in South Africa next year.
