New initiative to contribute to better usage of natural
resources

20 September 2007

The Gauteng Provincial Government will reward environmental activists who
also contribute towards fighting poverty, today, Thursday, 20 September
2007.

In addition to the recognition of existing environmental activists, the
Gauteng MEC for Agriculture, Conservation and Environment, Khabisi Mosunkutu,
will also use the opportunity to launch the new MaTshepo Khumbani Awards (MTK)
project, named after a prominent community activist. Ma Khumbani's son,
standing in for his mother, will be present to witness the launch of the MTK
awards.

The primary purpose of the MTK project is to mobilise civil society into
projects and programmes that encourage better and sustainable use of natural
resources. Because of its poverty alleviation orientation, the project has been
incorporated into the provincial Expanded Public Work Programme, a programme
designed to help fight poverty and create jobs.

The MTK Awards project is divided into seven categories. Winners in each
category win monetary prizes and trophies. The categories include: best
community empowerment project, junior natural resource management project,
which is aimed at the youth, best environment rehabilitation project, best
environment awareness projects and other initiatives focusing on mobilisation
of civil society to contribute to efficient management of natural
resources.

The overall winner from those categories will take home a R20 000 prize, a
trophy and will qualify to represent the Gauteng province at the national Land
Care Awards, which will take place during in 2008.
