Gauteng MEC for Social Development, Kgaogelo Lekgoro, will on Thursday, 10
May 2007, unveil a memorial wall at the Walter Sisulu Child and Youth Care
Centre in Noordgesig, Johannesburg, during the 10-year anniversary of the
establishment.
The wall will honour teachers and children from the centre who have passed
away. The unveiling will also be held in honour of political stalwart Walter
Sisulu, who was the patron of the centre and committed to the struggle of the
people of South Africa against apartheid, injustice and poverty.
The Walter Sisulu Child and Youth Care Centre was established on 1 April
1997 as a pilot project of the Gauteng Provincial Government, with Sisulu as
its patron. The centre was designed to pilot the transformation of the child
and youth care system into an integrated service delivery system providing
programmes, care, education, treatment and after care services to vulnerable
children, youth and their families.
The centre has sufficiently complemented the Gauteng Provincial Government's
vision of creating jobs, reducing unemployment and eradicating poverty. The
centre's programme embraces the rebuilding of families, communities and social
relations, reducing youth criminality and unemployment, dealing with orphans
and vulnerable children and making social development services more accessible
to communities.
The Deputy Minister of Social Development Dr Jean Benjamin, Member of the
Mayoral Committee Councillor Nandi Mayathula Khoza and other local councillors
will also attend this historic 10-year anniversary of the centre.
The event will take place as follows:
Date: Thursday, 10 May 2007
Time: 10:00
Venue: Walter Sisulu Child and Youth Care Centre, 3 Modder Street,
