Reading, writing and arithmetic, these are the cornerstones of learning.
Realising the importance of these skills, KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Ina
Cronje avid reader and a master of the written word, initiated a short story
competition for public schools in KwaZulu-Natal. Children could enter in any
language.
"Writing skills are of utmost importance, whether it is report writing, a
letter or just a card to your mother. Reading and writing go hand in hand. If
you cannot read you can also not do mathematics or any other subject.
Unfortunately those are exactly the skills that many of our children are
lacking.
With this competition, which will become an annual event, we hope to
encourage our children to develop these skills. And what better way to read
your own story!" MEC Cronje said at the prize giving ceremony in
Pietermaritzburg on 17 November 2006.
She congratulated the 75 learners, who came from across KwaZulu-Natal to
receive prizes that included CD players, books, word games and pens and
pencils. "You have taken me back to my own school days and I have thoroughly
enjoyed reading your stories".
She also thanked Shuter and Shooter for their participation in the
adjudication and some of the prizes, as well as the language subject advisors,
who went the extra mile to help with the adjudication.
