Mbeki Housing Project in flagstaff, Eastern Cape
19 October 2007
The National Minister of Housing Lindiwe Sisulu, in partnership with the
National and Provincial Housing Portfolio Committees, Eastern Cape Housing
Local Government and Traditional Affairs MEC, Toko Xasa and the Mayor of
Bhizana Local municipality, will commence the rectification process of 10
houses at the Thabo Mbeki Housing Project in Flagstaff, Bhizana in the Eastern
Cape on 23 to 24 October 2007.
This follows a commitment made by Minister Sisulu and the committee during
the People's Assembly held in Bhizana, Eastern Cape from the 17 to 19 September
2007, that they would come back during the month of October to build houses in
the area.
During her visit to the project, the Minister apologised to the
beneficiaries for the failure of government to meet their expectations and
reiterated that she refuses to be associated with shoddy workmanship.
The 10 houses that will be rectified form part of the 216 completed houses
in the 503 units blocked project. The project was blocked due to insufficient
funds as a result of inflation and poor performance by the developer and its
service providers.
