Home Affairs on Valentine’s Day marriages on Robben Island

Couples tie the knot in grand style

14 February 2006

Twenty-two couples celebrated Valentine's Day in grand style when they said
"I do" at the Robben Island Museum today, 14 February 2006, in Cape Town.

The event was presided over by the Chairperson of the Home Affairs Portfolio
Committee, Mr Patrick Chauke, and marked the sixth anniversary of the event
since its inception in 2000. The couples, who were ferried to the Island, were
in a jovial mood as they proclaimed their eternal love for each other and
entered into a period of matrimonial bliss.

In his address to the couples shortly before they got married, Mr Chauke
said it is significant that the couples got married at the venue that had a
sentimental value to many South Africans. "This Island holds many deep meanings
to all of us," he said. The Department of Home Affairs, in partnership with the
Robben Island Museum, deemed it proper to perform this solemn mission on the
Island, which, in the past, represented hopelessness but is now an icon of
victory over overwhelming hardships.

Today's event brings to over 120 a number of couples who have had their
marriages solemnised on the Island.
