Home Affairs on identity document collection during voter registration
weekend for elections 2009

Home Affairs ready for second voter registration weekend

2 February 2009

The Department of Home Affairs today made a call to people who have not
collected their identity documents (IDs) to visit Home Affairs offices to
collect their ID documents. The call is especially relevant to people who need
IDs to register for elections during the voter registration weekend on 7 to 8
February 2009.

People who applied for IDs between December 2007 and December 2008 can go to
Home Affairs offices where they originally applied for their IDs to collect
them. They need to bring along proof of application.

All Home Affairs offices rendering Civic Services functions will be open for
extended hours on Saturday, 7 February and Sunday, 8 February from 08h00 to
17h00.

Those who are without IDs and are eligible vote and wish to register may
visit Home Affairs offices to apply for Temporary Identity Certificate which
can be issued in one day. The Temporary Identity Certificate is acceptable as a
form of identity to register for elections.

Over 300 000 IDs remain uncollected at Home Affairs offices countrywide.
People who wish to check the status of their application may call the contact
centre on 0800 60 11 90.
