17 March 2009

North West MEC for Developmental local Government and Housing, Howard Yawa
is to hand over the Marikana emergency housing project outside Rustenburg on
Friday 27 March 2009.The emergency housing project is the second to be
completed by the provincial department in the past three months.

Three hundred and fifty seven houses were extensively damaged following a
storm that left a trail of devastation in its trail on Tuesday 4 November 2008.
157 families were displaced as a result of the storm that also blew away 56
shacks and left 54 residents from the mining settlement in hospital.

“Despite the heavy rainfall that we have experienced in the past months, the
pace of delivery and the unique empowerment model that we implemented on the
project has demonstrated that we are indeed a compassionate and caring
government,” says MEC Yawa.

The greater Taung emergency housing project that cost over R84 million was
handed over in December 2008. The massive project involved reconstruction of 2
000 houses scattered across 40 villages.
