Good is just not good enough says MEC Yawa

16 May 2006

Apprehension gripped members of the Provincial Legislature and the packed
public gallery in the North West Provincial Legislature when Public Works MEC,
honourable Howard Yawa, announced that the Department of Public Works was set
to go mad. The provocative announcement was made during the tabling of the
Department's Budget Vote speech in the North West Provincial Legislature
today.

Sighs of relieve and applause greeted MEC Yawa's unpacking of the
Department's concept of MAD, which stands for making a difference. The
commitment includes a new focus on productivity, economic, effectiveness and
efficiency, which MEC Yawa said should make a positive difference in the
delivery of services towards clients of the Department.

"The delivery by this Department must be of such quality and speed that no
one can miss to notice. Our actions must be louder than words," said MEC
Yawa.

MEC Yawa said that the Department's resolve to denounce business as usual in
the previous financial year has seen Department receive a gold award for the
Best Managed Project through the Modimola Expanded Public Works Project (MEPWP)
in the Premier's Public Sector Excellence Awards. In the best performing
department category, the Department received a silver award.

The accolades that the Department also received in recognition of its
service delivery efforts include a bronze award received from the prestigious
professional management review for the most proactive provincial government
department.

"Good is just not good enough. I am placing the Department of Public Works
on the road from good to great .If you are not prepared to walk this road of
making a difference with me, you should resign or transfer somewhere else. We
will have no place for people who do not want to go mad," MEC Yawa told the
Department of Public Works managers and employees.
