Yawa congratulates Bophirima District on winning the national Vuna Awards
5 December 2007
The North West MEC for Developmental Local Government and Housing, Howard
Yawa, has congratulated Bophirima District Municipality, for scooping at least
three national Vuna Awards during a ceremony that was held last night at the
Gallagher Estate, Midrand.
Bophirima District Municipality received awards in the following
categories:
* joint winner with Sedibeng on best performing district municipality in
discharging its service delivery mandate
* winner on good governance
* best category C municipality and an overall winner with the prize money of R2
million, and a trophy.
Speaking after the announcement last night, Yawa said he was ecstatic that a
municipality which is mainly rural has been able to perform amid the
challenges. It had most of its local municipalities listed under Project
Consolidate - a programme intended to give hands-on support to
municipalities.
"I am confident that through our various intervention programmes, we will
still see most of our municipalities reaching the same standard as set by
Bophirima," said Yawa. He further added that he salutes and congratulates the
District Municipality for their outstanding performance. "These awards are in
recognition of hard work and excellence." Yawa said.
The Vuna awards were introduced in 2003 as an initiative of the Department
of Provincial and Local Government (DPLG), together with the Development Bank
of Southern Africa (DBSA), Productivity South Africa and the South African
Local Government Association (Salga), as a way of encouraging a culture of
performance and accountability in service delivery.
