The Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Prof. Blade Nzimande, will join the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Mr Parks Tau, to launch the expanded Biovac vaccine manufacturing facility on Monday 25 May 2026.
Biovac is a South African-based biopharmaceutical company established in 2003 in partnership with the government to build local vaccine manufacturing capability. The company plays a strategic role in strengthening South Africa and Africa's health security through the production and supply of vaccines.
This event is significant for South Africa's biopharmaceutical sector as well as our broader industrial development goals. The expansion of Biovac speaks directly to intersection of industrialisation and research and development, in which both departments have a strong and shared interest.
Recent investments, including support from the European Investment Bank and International Finance Corporation, are also enabling the expansion of Africa's first end-to-end multi-vaccine manufacturing facility.
The event will feature a tour of the institute and a demonstration of its current capabilities.
The media are invited as follows:
Date: Monday 25 May 2026
Venue: The Biovac Institute,15 Alexandra Rd, Cape Town
Time:12:00 to 14:00
