Gautrain bursaries available in engineering

Gautrain bursaries available for aspiring engineers

7 March 2006

The Gauteng Provincial Government announced today that the Gautrain Project,
through the assistance of the preferred bidder, Bombela, will be making
available 15 bursaries for engineering students for this year.

This will be the first of many bursaries that will be awarded to students in
engineering and related disciplines. The bursary will be enough for a student
to cover tuition fees, books and other equipment needed for the course.
Bursaries will be made available to five civil engineering, five electrical
engineering and five mechanical engineering students. An added bonus to these
bursaries are the chance to gain important practical experience at the head
offices of the international companies involved in Bombela such as France,
Canada and England.

"This is the first of many positive spin-offs that the Gautrain will bring
about. Our country needs skilled and experienced engineers to make projects
like Gautrain a reality, and by giving our children the necessary skills, we
are ensuring the future of this country and its people. A future made possible
by our own people," said Gauteng MEC for Public Transport, Roads and Works,
Ignatius Jacobs.

"We will give preference to students in the Gauteng area and will focus on
students from previously disadvantaged communities and we are especially keen
to look at making the engineering profession more accessible to women," said
Jacobs.
