Gauteng Treasury strengthens management of finances

Treasury to strengthen management of finances

22 June 2006

The Gauteng Treasury will strengthen the capacity of departments to improve
the management of their finances.

Addressing the Gauteng Legislature on the departmental budget, the MEC for
Finance and Economic Development Paul Mashatile said the newly established
Gauteng Treasury will provide technical assistance to all departments in
Gauteng to ensure proper budgeting, financial planning and management.

"The public finance management unit of Treasury will play a leading role in
developing financial management skills and capacity within departments. This
will be done in order to increase the number of departments who obtain
unqualified audit opinions," Mashatile said.

One of the immediate tasks of the Gauteng Treasury will be to attract and
retain appropriate technical skills to ensure improved financial management in
Gauteng.

Mashatile said the Department of Treasury will also play a critical role in
strengthening the capacity of Chief Financial Officers in all departments to
allow them to effectively execute their tasks.

As part of efforts to make local government work better, Mashatile said
municipalities across Gauteng will be supported in the implementation of the
Municipal Finance Management Act and the drawing up of budgets in line with
their integrated development plans.

"The people of Gauteng look up to Treasury to be the true and efficient
custodians of their resources. Their hopes and aspirations of a better Gauteng
whose finances are well managed rests on our shoulders," Mashatile said.
