Gauteng Transport to pay bus commuter subsidies

Gauteng Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works pay
commuter subsidies in line with court decision

2 February 2009

Province to be later reimbursed when the national department transfers funds
to Gauteng

The Gauteng Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works has already made
commuter subsidy payments to bus operators in the province, for claims made at
the end of November 2008, in line with a court order made last week. The
provincial department said it had abided by the law while also ensuring that
the commuting public continues to have access to affordable public
transport.

The provincial department conducts the subsidy function on an agency basis
on behalf of the national department and only transfers funds to Gauteng bus
operators when these are received from national government.

In the mean time, the national department has already made a commitment to
reimburse the province at a later date.
