Gauteng on shebeen permit verification

Gauteng shebeen owners respond positively as deadline draws
closer

24 July 2006

Since the start of the grace period for Gauteng shebeen owners to submit
their permits for verification and extension, the Gauteng Liquor Licensing
office has received more than 6 000 applications for extensions and processed
over 4 000 new applications. This brings to over 15 000 the number of shebeen
permits processed since the Gauteng Liquor Act came into effect.

In terms of the measures announced by the Gauteng Liquor Licensing office in
April this year, the period of operation for existing shebeen permits has been
extended for a year. They will now expire at the end of April 2007.

These measures also required shebeen owners to submit their permits to the
Gauteng Liquor Licensing office for verification by the end of July 2006.

Head of Liquor Licensing in Gauteng, Kenneth Mapengo, said shebeen owners
have until the end of July to submit their existing permits for verification.
"This will make it possible for the period of operation of their permits to be
extended," said Mapengo.

Meanwhile, work to amend the Gauteng Liquor Act is at an advanced stage. The
process of amending the Act is expected to be complete by October this
year.
