Gauteng on replacement of lifts in hospitals and government
buildings

Replacement of 200 old lifts in Gauteng hospitals and
government buildings gets into gear

12 January 2009

The Gauteng Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works has started in
earnest with the implementation of the replacement of 200 old lifts in
hospitals and government buildings across the province, as announced late last
year, 2008. The programme was initiated as a result of the age and condition of
these lifts, most of which are more than thirty years old. Contractors are
already on site to start with the stripping of the old lifts' infrastructure,
after which the installation of the new ones will take place. Priority has been
given to buildings such as Charlotte Maxeke, Johannesburg General Hospital,
Rahima Moosa Mother and Child, Coronation Hospital and Chris Hani Baragwanath
Hospital.

The lift replacement programme will also cover places such as Tambo Memorial
Hospital, Edenvale Hospital, Tshwane Hospital Complex, Matlotlo House
Extension, No 69 President Street, No 78 Market Street, the Golden Oaks
Building, and others. The whole programme will be completed by the end of this
year.

The department has apologised for any inconvenience that might be caused
while work is being done and also appealed for patience from the public. The
department also said that the project would significantly enhance service
delivery at public service points for the benefit of the residents of
Gauteng.
