Thousands of people will descend on the Johannesburg Stadium as the province
hosts a Car Free Day Concert on Saturday, 20 October 2007, in order to promote
the objectives of the Transport Month Campaign and prepare local people for big
events such as the 2010 FIFA World Cup and beyond.
MEC Jacobs will address concert revellers about a partnership for better
public transport and the transport challenges for big events
The artist line up will be headed by artists who have also endorsed the
campaign including Don Laka, Jabu Hlongwane, Selaelo Selota, Malaika,
Mafikizolo, Kwela, Tebza and Ladies in Jazz. The festivities will start at
10h00 and run until 19h00. The entrance fee is R55 and tickets are available at
Computicket. A cyclist's development team will also take part in the
festivities.
The concert will promote Park and Ride and Walk facilities with transport
from the parking sites to the performance area. There will be parking space at
the Ellis Park parking, the Standard Bank Arena, the Beeld parking grounds and
the University of Witwatersrand. The shuttle services will operate between
10h00 and 14h00 and also between 17h00 and 20h00 in the evening, with 20
minutes interval.
Speaking ahead of the Car Free Day Concert, Gauteng MEC for Public
Transport, Roads and Works, Ignatius Jacobs said "the roads belong to everyone,
and they must be shared by pedestrians, motorists, cyclists and public
transport. Together, we must build safe and sustainable communities, and aim at
achieving the following objectives:
Help pedestrians to reclaim public open space by making our towns and cities
liveable and more accessible; address the rising cost of fuel; contribute to
the safety of cyclists and pedestrians on our roads; reduce the environmental
impact of pollution and, use our road network to support economic growth by
ensuring access to opportunities."
