opens doors in Polokong, near Sebokeng
4 April 2009
Polokong residents in Sedibeng today welcomed the official opening of their
seven million rand, Johan Deo Clinic by Gauteng Health MEC Mr Brian
Hlongwa.
The opening of the new clinic follows the opening last week of the Mandela
Sisulu Clinic in Soweto which was hailed for its world class standards by
Gauteng Premier Mr Paul Mashatile.
"Johan Deo is the third clinic we are opening within a space of one week, as
we follow through on our mandate of providing easier access and quality health
care for our residents," said Hlongwa.
The need for permanent health care delivery in the area was identified in
2001 because services were offered from a mobile clinic which operated only on
certain days. In 2004 the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) saw the need to
have a new clinic in Polokong. A temporary structure was then erected and
services continued while the building of the new clinic commenced.
Hlongwa urged the community to take ownership and responsibility of the
clinic and appealed with non government organisations (NGO) within the
community to help with home based care services.
Services that will be offered by this clinic include:
* antenatal care
* postnatal care
* family planning
* tuberculosis (TB)/HIV collaboration
* immunisations
* sexually transmitted infection (STI)
* voluntary counselling and testing
* youth services
* chronicle illnesses
