A 15 year old boy from a school of industry in Heidelberg was allegedly
arrested for stealing a television set at school over the weekend. Police were
called and the learner was arrested. On Sunday, we received a report that the
learner committed suicide while in policy custody. Schools of Industries are
schools attended by learners whose parental responsibilities are taken over by
Department of Education and they operate on a boarding format.
Yesterday, a 14 year old grade 7 learner stabbed a 13 year old grade 6
learner at Edleen Primary School in Kempton Park. The learner was rushed to
hospital and we are still awaiting further information.
"I am deeply shocked by these unfortunate incidents," said MEC for Education
in Gauteng Angie Motshekga.
