Economic Development to honour women in business

26 October 2006

The Gauteng Department of Economic Development will honour the contribution
of women in business by hosting the Passing of the Torch event on 30 November
2006.

The Passing of the Torch event was launched in 2005 by the MEC for Finance
and Economic Affairs, Paul Mashatile, to pay tribute to the role played by
women in the growth and development of the Gauteng economy.

The event will honour women who are making their mark in the fields of
finance, infrastructure development, film, tourism and hospitality, trade,
services and manufacturing.

Members of the public are encouraged to nominate women who have
distinguished themselves in these fields. The closing date for nominations is 3
November 2006.

The overall criteria for nominations are:
* nominees should be in business and have to be people who have made a
considerable contribution to economic growth and job creation in Gauteng
* those nominated should be role models in the communities.

Women who are chosen as winners in the various categories will be presented
with awards, R20 000 each from ABSA and will be "torch bearers" for twelve
months after which they will pass on the torch to other women who would have
been nominated for next year's event. The torch symbolises the role these women
will be playing in lighting the way and motivating others to follow in their
footsteps.

Nomination forms are available on the website: http://www.finance.gpg.gov.za or http://www.gep.co.za
