Minister Fraser-Moleketi announces Government Technology
(GovTech) 2006

3 October 2006

The Minister of Public Service and Administration, Ms Geraldine
Fraser-Moleketi, is to launch a Government Technology conference to be held in
Sun City from 30 October to 3 November 2006.

This event, dubbed “GovTech 2006” and hosted by the State Information
Technology Agency (SITA), will be the first in what will be a premier annual
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) event for the public
sector.

The conference will kick-off with an Executive Leadership Forum to be held
on 30 October 2006. This forum will bring together leading practitioners in the
field of Information Technology (IT) from a cross section of society, both
local and international. The theme of the forum will be around the broader
strategic issues of building a knowledge economy for South Africa.

“By bringing together key role players from around the world, GovTech 2006
will establish a framework for how new technologies and the internet can be
harnessed to stimulate socio-economic development. But importantly, how ICT can
be applied in the public sector to enhance service delivery,” commented the
Minister.

“While GovTech will ensure that we do not determine our guiding principles
in a vacuum, it will also set the stage for how South Africa can develop its
own best practices, based on our history and cultural development,” said
Minister Fraser-Moleketi.

The leadership forum will consider what programmes are needed to create a
climate that stimulates innovation and creativity, what new legislation will be
required to enable businesses to operate in a growing and vibrant economy and
how we can bring about cultural change in institutions to adapt to an emerging
economy.

“By providing a powerful forum and offering the opportunity for executive
leadership workshops, I believe GovTech 2006 will begin to provide a platform
where some difficult questions can be asked, and lessons from around the world
assimilated,” she concluded.
