6 October 2006

On the 12 - 13 October the Department of Public Safety, Security and Liaison

Bloemfontein. Approximately 300 guests representing a variety of organisations
will attend.

Some of the presentations will cover the following:

* advancement and protection of worker rights in the Agricultural
Sector
* the protection of the poor and vulnerable against arbitrary farm evictions:
the role of one-stop "justice centres"
* the significance and extent of the transition from the commando (or military
reservist) to the civilian policing (police reservist) system: a bird's eye
view of the current challenges regarding crimes committed in rural areas and
cross-border crimes
* the challenges faced by rural and border communities and a perspective on the
prevention and reduction of crimes committed in rural and cross-border
areas
* a perspective on the challenges faced by emerging farmers and the impact of
crime on their development
* patterns of violence and abuse on farms and the extent of racial bias in the
handling of cases by the Criminal Justice System.

Discussions will be held about:

* the significance of Community Police Forums (CPFs) in the broadening of
stakeholder participation in the identification, implementation, evaluation and
review of crime prevention needs and priorities in the farming- and
cross-border areas

must enjoy equal access to law and justice
* the role of municipalities in the promotion of local community safety.
