The MEC for Health, Mr Sakhiwo Belot, will deliver the keynote address and
launch the TB Crisis Plan for the Free State.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) AFRO Regional Committee meeting held in
Maputo on 25 August 2005 culminated in a unanimous declaration of TB as an
emergency in Africa. Recognising the deep concern about the gravity of the
epidemic, the resolution warned that unless "urgent extraordinary actions" are
in place the situation will worsen and the 2015 Millennium Development Goal
(MDG) TB targets will not be met.
Following the development of a national TB crisis management plan which
focuses on specific districts in all the provinces, Fezile Dabi has been
identified as high priority district. A provincial plan has been developed for
implementation in Fezile Dabi to strengthen the management of TB in this
district. Included is a communication and social mobilisation campaign that
focus on improving awareness and TB cure rates with messages targeted at
specific vulnerable groups.
