The Department of Labour in the Free State will next week conduct a series
of public hearings on wage increases and working conditions in the hospitality
sector.
The hearings, scheduled for between Monday, 11 and Friday, 15 September,
will be held in Phuthaditjhaba, Bethlehem, Welkom and Bloemfontein to give
feedback on the suggestions given earlier this year to the Employment
Conditions Commission (ECC) on the proposed sectoral determination.
With tourism booming in South Africa, the hospitality sector is regarded as
one of the growth engines of our country's economy.
The Department earlier in the year released a report of findings to the
public for their comments to be forwarded as recommendations to the ECC, the
Minister's advisory body on employment conditions, to develop a sectoral
determination.
The hearings are a follow-up to an earlier investigation into the wage level
and employment conditions, the level of vulnerability of the employees within
this sector, as well as the possibility of grouping business activities such as
hotel, catering, letting of flats and accommodation establishments, as well as
those within travel and tourism, gambling and lotteries and conservation and
guiding into a single sectoral determination.
Labour spokesman, Mokgadi Pela, today urged stakeholders to fully
participate on the development of this sectoral determination.
âThe hospitality has become one of our core businesses of this country's
economy and it is pivotal that all stakeholders involved give their maximum
participation on the hearings to ensure that the sector is properly regulated,â
he said.
The hearings will be open to the media.
