Bloemfontein students at the Free State School of Nursing Campus in
Bloemfontein today participated in illegal action relating to the non-payment
of bursaries. Vandalism and unruly behaviour resulted in damage to state
property.
Herewith the content of the response provided to the student representatives
at the Free State School of Nursing (FSSON).
The Chairperson
The Department of Health has been experiencing difficulties in finances.
Measures are being put in place to handle the situation. The FSSON Management
has received the demands from students and still commits itself to resolving
the problem of payment of bursaries as best as is possible.
The management conveys the following:
* Your gathering is illegal. The entire Department of Health is classified as
an essential service and therefore no one is allowed to go on strike.
* All FSSON students will receive their total bursary amount minus official
deductions as prescribed by provincial policy.
* Due to lack of Departmental funds the bursary payments will be done in the
next financial year that commences in April 2009. The option of assisting
students as discussed with student leadership remains available.
* Classes and clinical practice will continue according to the roster and
students that absent themselves will be subjected to the academic regulations
of e.g. 80% attendance and employed students will be subjected to employment
rules such as leave without pay.
* You are instructed to stop your illegal gathering by 12h00 midday today
13/02/2009 otherwise management will be forced to call in the police. You are
furthermore requested to refrain from any intimidatory action towards fellow
students, staff and the public.
Management
We find the destruction and vandalism of government property unacceptable and
will not tolerate this type of behaviour from the students. Students were also
issued with an ultimatum letter to refrain from industrial action as health is
regarded as an essential service.
