Background

On 9 October 1998, the then Deputy President, Mr Thabo Mbeki, launched the
partnership against HIV and AIDS, signalling the beginning of an era during
which isolated struggles against the pandemic of HIV and AIDS were to be no
more. This partnership is a multi-sectoral response to HIV and AIDS which is
constituted by sectors in the labour movement, business, government,
non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the broader civil society
structures.

The commemoration of the partnership is to remind ourselves of the
commitment we made in 1998 to unite in the fight against HIV and AIDS. The
theme for this year is "Stop AIDS, recommit yourself."

The Department of Health is calling upon all existing and new partners to
recommit themselves in the fight against HIV and AIDS; as well as to accelerate
prevention strategies against HIV and AIDS.

Prevention:

1. not to be infected with HIV and AIDS
2. prevent opportunistic infections and complications in people already
infected.

HIV and AIDS affect the eye causing low vision, pain and blindness. This
year the partnership event will focus on the eye as it relates to HIV and AIDS.
Eye Awareness Week will be celebrated from 9 to 13 October. The theme for this
year is "Low Vision."

From 08h00 all people interested can visit the eye stall where
ophthalmologists and optometrists will be available to do eye tests and to
refer patients if necessary.

At 10h00 the formal programme will start.
