A Reddersburg farmer outside Bloemfontein in the Free State faces a possible
charge of contravening the Child Labour Act which prohibits the employment of
children, should the Department of Labour inspectors investigating find that a
boy employed in his livestock farm is under-aged.
It is alleged that the boy has been employed by the farmer to feed his
racing dogs at the farm. The inspectors this morning (Monday) issued an
undertaking to the farmer to release the boy from work while they are waiting
for documents to determine the boyâs age.
Clause 25 of the Sect oral Determination for Farm Workers and Section 43 of
the Basic Conditions of Employment Act outlaws the employment of children under
the age of 15 to do work that interferes with their welfare, health and
education.
