Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Firoz Cachalia, will launch an interactive
Child Safety DVD and officially open the Junior Traffic Centre at the
Heidelberg traffic regional offices on Friday, 13 February 2009.
The event which starts at 10h00 is part of Gauteng government's provincial
road safety strategy aimed at educating all road users, including school
children, about the importance of observing traffic rules and thus reducing
road fatalities by 30% in the province.
Child safety DVD
The DVD is designed to promote child safety among children in the three to six
age groups through a fun oriented illustration of their rights and how they
should respond to threats and infringements. It will also assist adults, mainly
the parents and caregivers in developing an understanding of child safety
issues and being able to identity and assist abused children, or children in
danger.
Junior Traffic Centre
The Centre is located within the premises of Heidelberg traffic offices, and
will give learners an exposure to various road signs, and dramatic educational
package consisting of activity books and flipcharts to assist them in road
safety education in the classroom.
The event will be attended by various role players including the provincial
traffic management, local authorities, leaders of different organisations and
the provincial government departments. This centre will assist to ensure that
there is practical training for youngsters, especially school going kids,
through the junior road safety programmes.
