Public Service Research and Innovation: A quest for sustained service delivery

The Commonwealth Association for Public Administration and Management (CAPAM) is pleased to announce that they are co-hosting a Regional Thematic Leadership conference with the Public Administration and Management Academy (PALAMA) in South Africa.

About CAPAM

CAPAM is a member supported non-for-profit association devoted to enhancing good governance and excellence in public administration across the Commonwealth. This is achieved through focused research and the delivery of expert workshops, learning programmes and thematic conferences.

Conference Theme: Public Service Research and Innovation; A Quest for
Sustained Service Delivery.

Within the complex structures, systems and processes of government, encouraging innovative thinking will require visionary leaders that can recognise emerging opportunities. Keen leadership and proficient
management is needed to establish a culture for innovation, weigh the risks and benefits of new ideas, overcome the resistance to change, motivate staff to pursue solutions, and deliver real and tangible results for citizens.

In light of this, Leadership, Management and Innovation oriented service delivery solutions in the Public Service are important components in the curriculum of South Africa’s Public Administration Leadership and Management Academy (PALAMA).

It is in this regard that PALAMA and South Africa’s Centre for Public Service Innovation (CPSI) find synergies to work together in a commitment to help identify, support and nurture innovative leadership, management and solutions in the public sector in a quest to improve service delivery. Enabling the attainment of this goal and sustenance of good practice is the culture of Research, this being a systematic method of exploring, analysing, conceptualising social life in order to extend, correct or verify knowledge aid in the construction of theory or good practice.

This conference will examine the gains and challenges of Research and Innovation in the Public Service and the role of leaders and management practice, at all levels of Government, to motivate public servants to further engage on possible means to the betterment of the knowledge base and service oriented practice in the public service.

Some of the themes that will be discussed at the conference include:

  • Leading Change for Productivity and Innovation
  • Entrepreneurship in Public Service Innovation
  • Research orientation in the Public Service
  • Training and Development for state delivery capacity enhancement
  • Fostering a Culture of Responsive Leadership and Management Accountability
