Gauteng commemorates Human Rights Day

March 21, is Human Rights Day and Gauteng joins the rest of South Africa to honour men and women who lost their lives in the struggle for freedom on this fateful day 53 years ago.

Organised by the Gauteng Provincial Government in partnership with Sedibeng District Municipality the event will start 07h00 with a wreath laying ceremony at Phelindaba cemetery then proceed to the Sharpeville Monument followed by a 3km march led by the Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, Gauteng MEC for sport, arts, culture and recreation Lebogang Maile, Sedibeng District Municipality Executive Mayor Mahole Simon Mofokeng and other Provincial MECs.

The march is aimed at highlighting the plight of women and children against abuse. About 10 000 people are expected to join the march.

The march will start from the old Sharpeville police station and navigate through the township and end at the cricket grounds next to George Thabe Stadium where the main event will take place.

“On this day, we pay tribute to men and women whose selfless dedication made our freedom possible and who are today at the forefront of building our democracy, our economy and our communities. We will also use this day to reflect on the challenges that women and children are facing in our society,” said Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Lebogang Maile.

The event will also include a service delivery expo at the Cricket grounds where various government departments will exhibit their services and directly interact with the public. The Department of Home Affairs will also be rendering their services on site on the day.
