The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) invites members
of the media to a briefing on 17 August 2006 at the Imbizo Media Centre, 120
Plein Street (Parliament).
The briefing will serve as an information session to update the country's
state of readiness to host the conference. Journalists will be briefed on
issues that South Africa intends to press on at the upcoming third
Environmental Facility Assembly (GEF) which will be hosted at the Cape Town
International Convention Centre.
President Thabo Mbeki will do the opening address; Minister of Finance
Trevor Manuel will chair the assembly and Minister for Environmental Affairs
and Tourism Martinus Van Schalkwyk will lead the South African delegation.
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is an independent financial
organisation that provides financial assistance or grants to developing
countries for projects that benefit the global environment and promote
sustainable livelihoods in local communities. For more than 12 years the GEF
has provided invaluable support to developing countries in order to address
global environmental problems such as climate change, the loss of biodiversity
and protection of the ozone layer.
Media are encouraged to attend the briefing as issues of media accreditation
will also be addressed.
