Electoral Commission on national results operation centre

National results operation centre

20 March 2009

On Wednesday, 22 April 2009 voters will go to 19 726 voting stations
countrywide to cast their vote in the 2009 national and provincial
elections.

As was the case with previous elections, the Independent Electoral
Commission (IEC) of South Africa will establish results operation centres
countrywide with the aim of creating facilities for the media and other
stakeholders where they can easily access information on voting and the
results.

National Results Operation Centre

The National Results Operation Centre will be in Pretoria in Hall J, Tshwane
Events Centre (previously Pretoria International Show Grounds), Soutter Street
(off DF Malan Street), Pretoria West.

A pool area will be available to media representatives who did not book
offices. The pool area will be equipped with computers, printing facilities,
telephones and faxes. Except for the use of the telephones and faxes, these
facilities will be available free of charge.

Media representatives in the centre will have access to reports on the
elections results system. Training will be given on the use of the system on
dates still to be confirmed.

Computers linked to the results system will not have access to the internet.
An internet café will be available for that purpose. Visitors will also be able
to use their 3G cards.

Accreditation for the National Results Operation Centre (ROC) in Pretoria is
compulsory. Since an electronic access control system which incorporates a
digital photograph will be used to produce security cards for the centre, media
representatives interested in making use of this facility will be required to
accredit in person.

The following dates and times have been set aside for accreditation:
* From Monday, 6 April between 09h00 and 18h00 at the National Results
Operation Centre, Hall J, Tshwane Events Centre (previously Pretoria
International Show Grounds), Soutter Street (off DF Malan Street), Pretoria
West
* Requirements for accreditation include an ID Book/passport and press
card/original letter by the editor confirming employment
* It will be appreciated if the attached accreditation form would be completed
before arrival for accreditation.

Media representatives are welcome to send someone with the completed form,
copy of their ID Book/passport, press card/original letter by the editor
confirming employment plus an electronic copy (CD, memory stick) of their
photograph. (Please note that photographs need to be clearly identified with
the person’s name and ID number.)

However, each person must collect his or her own card. Identification will
be required, i.e. ID Book/passport.

Provincial Results Operation Centres

Results Operation Centres will also be established in the nine
provinces.

Members of the media who wish to make use of the facilities at these centres
are requested to call the contact person for the centre they are interested in
as soon as possible to determine the requirements for that specific centre.
