6 March 2006
Eastern Cape Social Development in collaboration with government
departments, local municipalities and the disabled persons Organisations within
the Province will be hosting a two-day conference on disability issues, from 9
to 10 March 2006 at 08h00.
The two-day mini conference, which will be held at the Osner Hotel, East
London, will create an opportunity for the disabled people to meet at district
level to raise their concerns and challenges which will assist in the design of
the best practices model.
The conference aims at:
* Restoring dignity and self reliance of disabled people
* Integrating disabled people into the mainstream society
* Addressing issues of economic empowerment
* Linking disabled people with relevant resources.
The conference will not just be an end to itself but it will be a means to
achieve an end. This implies that doing lip service to the needs of people with
disabilities should be gradually eliminated, and be replaced by tangible
actions that will have socio economic spin off for the sector.
