The Eastern Cape Department of Roads and Transport was hoping to start
upgrading the track of the Amabele Mthatha rail line during this year.
The department met with prospective service providers that could offer
design, management and supervision services to the project, at the Amabele
train station, in the Eastern Cape, on Wednesday.
Prospective service providers would have until 24 April to submit their
bids, after which the tenders would be evaluated and a successful bidder
chosen.
The upgrade of the rail line, which was mostly used for passenger rail
services, would be completed within three years of the contract being
awarded.
The Eastern Cape is in the process of transforming its transport sector and
especially its rail transport.
