Since the restart of the Department of Roads and Transport 2007, pothole
campaign during October 2007 after heavy rainfall across the province, a
significant progress has been. The total number of potholes reported to have
been repaired throughout the province during the period of October and November
2007 is 12 200 square metres at a cost of R5,64 million.
The department has succeeded to keep the public complaints to a minimum thus
far. However, the rainy season is upon us and the heavy vehicles on our roads
are ever increasing. This might have, as already mentioned, a serious
detrimental effect on our performance over the following months.
The following has been happened from the various district offices:
Cacadu District: Considerable time and effort went into the patching and
repairs of the Addo road, sections of the coastal route R72 (especially between
Ncanaha and Fonteinskloof), section of road between Grahamstown and Bedford as
well as Grahamstown to Port Alfred. In the Cacadu Region we managed to do
surface repairs in the order of 3106 square metres at a cost of R728 000 and
113 000 square m of surface treatment (slurry) at a cost of R1,7 million.
Amathole District: During the period under review (October and November), we
mainly concentrated on the coastal road (R72), East Coast resorts roads,
section of the road between Bhisho and Komga and between Alice and Fort
Beaufort. We succeeded to do approximately 5 200 square metres pothole repairs
at a total cost of R2,1 million.
Chris Hani District: Pothole repairs were done on the Cradock â Hofmeyr
road, on roads around Middleburg and Molteno, Queenstown/Lady Frere/Dodrect
area and around Ngcobo. In total, 2 051 square metres potholes were repaired at
a cost of R390 000.
Ukhahlamba District: Pothole repairs are ongoing in the Barkly
East/LadyGrey/ Sterkspruit area. R199 800 was spent to date on 266 square

metres of potholes at a cost of R634 000 and around
Burgersdorp/Venterstad/Steynsburg/Henning we fixed 320 square metres of
potholes at a cost of R369 000. The total spent in Ukhahlamba is therefore R1,2
million for repairing of the 1 432 square metres potholes.
O R Tambo District: Most of the attention was given to roads around
Mbizana/Lusikisiki/Flagstaff and the Coffee Bay road. Potholes repaired are 372
square metres at a cost of R148 900. Repairs to potholes on the Coffee Bay road
will be intensified during the coming month.
