live healthy lifestyles
1 December 2007
The Eastern Cape Department of Health's Superintendent General (SG), Boya
pleaded with people to live healthy lifestyles, to be faithful to their
partners and to do away with substance abuse.
Boya said this at the Eastern Cape Provincial World AIDS Day Commemoration
which was held at the Lady Frere Stadium on 1 December 2007 where he mentioned
among other things that the Eastern Cape Department was there to do health
promotion and people should make use of the services brought to them.
In his speech the SG also mentioned that the Nelson Mandela Metro, OR Tambo
and Amathole Districts had a high prevalence of HIV and the department has put
its main focus on those districts. He encouraged people to be faithful to their
partners. "If you are not faithful, you are contributing to the spread of HIV,"
he said.
Representative from the Youth Commission confirmed what Boya said about
Nelson Mandela, OR Tambo and Alfred Nzo Districts having high prevalence of HIV
and women having the highest number.
During the event voluntary counselling and testing and health education
services were offered to people on site, health education pamphlets and flyers
were also distributed to the people.
MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Noxolo Abraham-Ntantiso
encouraged people to know their status and applauded the Department of Health
for bringing healthcare services to the people of that area.
