Chris Hani District scooped three awards at the 2007 Health
Excellence Awards

The Chris Hani District Municipality scooped three awards at the Eastern
Cape Department of Health Excellence Awards which were held at Vulindlela
Village, Coega in Port Elizabeth on Friday, 16 November 2007. The first award
was for the Best Performing District in the special awards category which was
presented by the Health MEC Mrs Nomsa Jajula to Mrs Nonkululeko Njaba who is
the District Manager.

Mrs Njaba attributed their achievement to teamwork amongst senior managers
and co-ordination with local municipalities and district municipalities through
functional integration. Chris Hani also took the second award which was for the
Best Performing Health Institution in Information and the last award for the
Best Performing Health Institution in Human Resources. Some of the MECs Special
Awards went to Ms Nomalanga Makwedini for the Best Performance at Mthatha
Hospital Complex, which incorporates the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital,
Mthatha General Hospital, Bedford Orthopaedic Hospital and Sir Henry Elliot
Hospital.

Mrs Makwedini has managed to reduce the number of complaints by promoting a
positive image of the complex. The Mthatha General Hospital Maternity and
tuberculosis (TB) units were renovated and a Haemophilia Clinic was opened for
effective and efficient care of haemophilic patients and relatives. Procurement
processes with regards to surgical sundries and equipment have also been
improved.

1. Excellence in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Crisis Control went to
Toto Khontyo who is the Acting Chief Ambulance Officer in the Queenstown
Metro
2. Dr Gerry Boon was also awarded for his role in Community Paediatrics
Development
3. Mr Thomas Dlamini for Timeous Update of Disease Incidence
4. Mr Louen Denovan Jacobs for Prompt Assistance in all Salary Related
Issues
5. Mrs Noxolo Mbalo for Best Performance at Mthatha Hospital Complex
6. Dr Buyiswa Nontyatyambo Mjamba-Matshoba for Prompt Reports and
Investigations
7. Mrs Nomvula Kwadjo for Best Performing Project which is known as the Saving
Mothers, Saving Babies project
8. Ms Nosisa Tshangana for the Health Promotion Programme
9. Miss Miyakazi Nokwe for the TB programme
10. Mrs ZZ Macingwane for Primary Healthcare
11. Mr Anele Homani who is the Parliamentary Liaison Officer for being
supportive and helpful to staff and is known for following through on all tasks
at hand
12. Mr Sikelela Bavuma for the Community Participation and Support at
Sakhisizwe LSA in Cala
13. Mr Thembinkosi Sopepa for commitment to safety during the strike in
Mthatha
14. Ms Refiloe Mahara for the Youth Programme in Maluti Community
Healthcare
