takes the dti to the Northern Cape
3 April 2009
The Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry (the dti), Elizabeth Thabethe,
will formally address a Small Business Imbizo, to be held at the Loopeng Sports
Field in Kuruman, Northern Cape, on Wednesday, 8 April 2009. The media is
invited to attend the event, from 09h00.
The Imbizo is organised by the dti, in conjunction with the John Taolo
Gaetsewe District Municipality and Moshaweng Local Municipality, and forms part
of the dti's outreach programme, 'Taking the dti to the People'. The programme,
which was launched by Deputy Minister Thabethe in July 2006, seeks to empower
township and rural potential, within emerging and established small, medium and
micro enterprises (SMMEs), by creating awareness around advisory and support
products and services offered by the dti and its agencies.
These agencies include the Companies and Intellectual Property Registration
Office (CIPRO), Khula Enterprise Ltd, South African Micro-Finance Apex Fund
(Samaf), Small Enterprise Development Agency (seda), the South African Women
Entrepreneurs' Network (SAWEN) and Co-operatives.
Residents of the towns, townships and villages of the Northern Cape will
gain much-needed insight into issues such as starting, registering, managing,
and obtaining financial assistance, to start and grow small businesses.
Amidst global economic pressures, the dti seeks to provide the necessary
support to foster SMMEs, as a means of creating employment and alleviating
poverty among the people of South Africa.
The Imbizo also confirms government's commitment to working together with
communities, and provincial and local spheres of government, to better the
lives of all South Africans.
