Disability, Child and Youth (GDCY) issues
5 December 2006
On Thursday, 7 December 2006, Minister in The Presidency, Dr Essop Pahad
will meet with Mayors and Municipality Managers from Eastern Cape, Western Cape
and Northern Cape as part of his drive to promote and strengthen mainstreaming
of Gender, Disability, Child and Youth (GDCY) rights in the developmental
programmes of municipalities.
Premier Dipuo Peters will also deliver an opening address on the state of
municipalities and challenges facing municipalities. Senior officials from the
South Africa Local Government Association (SALGA) and MECs for Local Government
will also be in attendance.
This initiative aims to familiarise municipalities with the Gender,
Disability, Child and Youth strategic agenda of government; the promotion of
close co-operation and synergy between municipalities, provinces and national
programmes, as well as to strengthen support for GDCY work in
municipalities.
South Africa locates national accountability for delivery on the rights of
women, people with disabilities, children and youth in The Presidency because
GDCY mainstreaming, co-ordination and oversight responsibilities are best
accomplished in the Presidency working in close co-operation with National
Departments, provinces and municipalities.
